Zynga Alums Launch Game Startups to Battle Zynga

Zynga Alums Launch Game Startups to Battle ZyngaOne mile north of Zynga’s (ZNGA) shopping mall-size headquarters in San Francisco, a dozen employees at JuiceBox Games crowd into a single-room office with one window and Ikea desks. They’re building a smartphone card-collecting game called HonorBound, which will compete with Zynga’s War of the Fallen and similar mobile offerings when JuiceBox launches it this summer. While the company has a fraction of the team and budget typically required for such a project, its three founders worked together at Zynga before striking out on their own last year. “We’re able to take risks that other companies may not be interested in taking,” says JuiceBox Chief Executive Officer Michael Martinez.
While Zynga struggles to reinvent itself as a mobile game maker, it’s encountering growing competition from former employees. Frustrated by the publicly traded company’s 3,000-employee bureaucracy—not to mention shrinking sales and a falling stock price—many of its top product managers have left for startups. “To be reminded what it’s like to create something as fast as you can and work with a small team of people you adore and trust—there’s nothing like that,” says Mike Verdu, Zynga’s former chief creative officer. A veteran PC game developer who joined Zynga in 2009, Verdu last month unveiled his company, TapZen, which combines Zynga’s free online model with games tailored for tablets.

Besides JuiceBox and TapZen, at least four other game startups have been created by Zynga defectors since the company’s initial public offering in December 2011. Last year former Zynga engineering director Amitt Mahajan, one of the architects of megahit FarmVille, founded Red Hot Labs, which has attracted $1.5 million from venture capital firms including Andreessen Horowitz. (Bloomberg LP, parent company of Bloomberg Businessweek, is an investor in Andreessen Horowitz.) Bee Cave Games, headed by former Zynga general manager Erik Bethke, is pushing Blackjack Casino. Bret Terrill, a former Zynga M&A manager, founded 12 Gigs, which makes Slots Heaven. Paul Bettner, who sold startup Newtoy to Zynga in 2010, plans to develop games for Ouya, a $99 console that runs on the Android operating system.
Zynga CEO Mark Pincus’s emphasis on empowering young executives to act as if they’re running a venture or game studio may have contributed to the diaspora. “One of the greatest measures of the success of our company is the progression of our people as leaders,” says Colleen McCreary, Zynga’s human resources head. “We encourage people to pursue their passions, regardless of where it takes them.” Zynga’s financial difficulties have hurt its focus on developing innovative games by tightening the reins on designers, says former chief game designer Brian Reynolds, who left earlier this year. “It’s hard to go experiment and not have somebody always ask you when will you be done,” he says.
Red Hot’s Mahajan helped start the Red Dog Group, a collection of former Zynga executives who hold Skype (MSFT) chats and meet about once a month to talk shop. The group, whose name is a nod to Zynga’s logo, shares tips on how to raise money from investors and how to improve mobile-user experience. “We’ve all come out of this really strong with the ability to run some companies,” says Roger Dickey, the creator of Zynga hit Mafia Wars, who left the company in 2011 to invest in startups. Zynga managers received training on how to use data analysis to build viral hits and take in more money from virtual goods, he says.
As TapZen’s Verdu builds his own games from scratch, he wishes he had the large computer systems Zynga provided him to run games through analytical tests. “I crave their access to analytics,” he says. “I do miss having all that infrastructure that makes life easy.” His former employer has given him another leg up, though: $10 million in seed money. In return, TapZen will let Zynga “take advantage of any breakthrough we make,” Verdu says.
The bottom line: Zynga managers are taking the company’s strategies, and sometimes its money, as they leave to launch their own game startups.

Play Atari "Breakout" in Google image search

Atari's "Breakout" recreated inside of Google Images.
Type in the words "Atari Breakout" into Google Images and get your mouse to play the classic video game.
Google commemorated the anniversary of Atari's "Breakout" on Monday by creating an "Easter egg" -- a term used to indicate there is a hidden message or joke inside of a program, website, movie or book.
"Breakout" was launched on May 13, 1976 as an arcade game. As Silicon Valley legend has it, Apple's late CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs was asked to create on a circuit board for a single-player version of "Pong." He recruited co-founder Steve Wozniak to help and paid him $350 for the gig.
That game turned out to be "Breakout."

Google to Launch Music-Streaming Service

Google Inc. GOOG -1.31% is set to launch a paid subscription music-streaming service akin to that of Spotify AB as soon as this week, according to people familiar with the matter.
Google on Wednesday is hosting its annual conference for software developers, Google I/O, where it has previewed new music-related initiatives in past years and it could unveil the new service then, these people said.
Google has signed deals with Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group to give people unlimited access to certain libraries of their songs for a fee, two of these people said.Google already has an existing music service, which it launched in 2011 and is part of its Google Play digital-media store for devices powered by its Android operating system.That service only lets people buy individual songs or albums, while the new one from Google's Android unit offers a paid subscription model to access whole libraries of songs.
Despite internal financial projections in 2011 that revenue from the music-buying service would reach more than $2 billion by this year, according to legal documents unearthed last year, some analysts say actual revenue is a fraction of that.It is unclear what kind of fee Google would charge for the new service, and whether there would be ads. Google generates almost all of its revenue from selling ads.
The music-streaming market is getting crowded. Apple Inc. AAPL +1.34% has been in talks to license music for a custom-radio service similar to the popular one operated by Pandora MediaInc. P -0.54%

Amazon.com Inc. AMZN -0.92% is working on a device for streaming audio through speakers or a television set and would offer a music-subscription service to compete with Pandora or Spotify, people familiar with the matter have said.

Like Apple and Google, Amazon already sells digital music by the song or album.

Spotify charges people $9.99 per month to listen to as many songs as they would like on any device. It also has a free, ad-supported version. Pandora charges $3.99 per month for its radio-style service and has a free, ad-supported version.

Separately, Google's YouTube video website has been trying to obtain licenses from music labels to start a paid subscription service for music videos and potentially also for audio-only songs, people familiar with the initiative have said. It is unclear where those talks stand.

At Google's developers conference, which takes place in San Francisco, the company also is expected to announce several upgrades to Android software as well as its line of Android-powered "Nexus" smartphones and tablet devices that it co-develops with hardware manufacturers. It also is expected to show off new features for its high-profile Google Glass wearable-computing device that it will sell to the public next year.
Last year at Google I/O, the company unveiled its $299 Nexus Q music- and video-streaming device, which it designed and built in the U.S. But Google later delayed the launch of the ball-shaped computing device to the public, saying it received poor feedback from consumers.
Two people familiar with the matter said the Nexus Q project is still continuing inside of Google but one of these people said that a relaunch shouldn't be expected this week.
A Google spokeswoman declined to comment.

BlackBerry Plans To Launch BBM Across Multiple Platforms This Summer

If you’re already a fan of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), we’ve got some exciting news designed to make it easier for you to connect with your entire mobile social network. BlackBerry plans to make BBM, our wildly popular mobile messaging service, available for the first time to iOS® and Android™ users this summer, (subject to approval by Google Play and the Apple App Store, as applicable). This means that, once available, you can welcome your friends and family using these other mobile platforms to connect over BBM and share in the Team BlackBerry love.
BBM BBM Across Multiple Platforms
As we’ve chronicled on our Inside BlackBerry blog for some time now, BBM set the standard for mobile instant messaging with fast and reliable service and an added layer of engagement with delivered and read statuses. You’ve shared with us your stories about how BBM has kept you connected when it mattered most to you. Upon release of the multi-platform BBM service, you can broaden that real-time connection to friends and colleagues on other supported mobile platforms.
In the first version of multi-platform BBM, iOS and Android users are expected to be able to experience the following BBM features:
  • The immediacy of BBM chats
  • Multi-person chats
  • Voice note sharing
  • BlackBerry Groups, where BBM users are able to set up groups of up to 30 people and share calendar, photos, files and more
The team here at BlackBerry has definitely been working hard to bring the much-adored BBM experience to a wider group of mobile users. In a recent press release at BlackBerry Live 2013, Andrew Bocking, Executive Vice President, Software Product Management and Ecosystem, at BlackBerry had this to say:
“For BlackBerry, messaging and collaboration are inseparable from the mobile experience, and the time is definitely right for BBM to become a multi-platform mobile service. BBM has always been one of the most engaging services for BlackBerry customers, enabling them to easily connect while maintaining a valued level of personal privacy. We’re excited to offer iOS and Android users the possibility to join the BBM community.”

BBM Quick Facts:

  • More than 60 million monthly active users
  • More than 51 million daily active users who are connecting with friends or colleagues an average of one and a half hours every day.
  • BBM users send and receive more than 10 billion messages each day, nearly twice as many messages per user per day as compared to other mobile messaging apps
  • Almost half of BBM messages are read within 20 seconds of being received; indicating how truly engaged BBM customers are
Today, BlackBerry also announced BBM Channels, a new social engagement platform within BBM that will allow customers to connect with the businesses, brands, celebrities and groups they are passionate about. BlackBerry plans to add support for BBM Channels as well as voice and video chatting for iOS and Android later this year, subject to approval by the Apple App Store and Google Play. If approved by Apple and Google, the BBM app will be available as a free download in the Apple® App StoreSM and Google Play store. Additional details about system requirements and availability will be announced closer to the launch.
That’s some pretty big news, indeed. Be sure to share your thoughts with us in the comments below, who will be the first person from your extended network that you introduce to BBM?

BlackBerry Messaging Is Set for iPhones and Android

Thorsten Heins, chief executive of BlackBerry, at an event Tuesday in Orlando, Fla.
BlackBerry said on Tuesday that it would open its BlackBerry Messenger service to users of iPhones and phones running the Android operating system while it also tries to turn the instant messaging system into a competitor of Twitter.
Thorsten Heins, BlackBerry’s president and chief executive, made the announcement at an annual marketing conference in Orlando, Fla., that offered relatively few new product announcements.
When carriers charged high fees for text messaging, BBM was a powerful selling tool for BlackBerry. Because it operates through BlackBerry’s own private network, BBM avoids fees from cellphone service providers and offers several technical advantages. But as the number of BlackBerry users in the United States fell drastically, the attractiveness and utility of a service that only connected BlackBerry phones also declined.
“Why is BlackBerry doing this now?” Mr. Heins asked at the meeting. “We are confident that the time is right for BlackBerry Messenger to become an independent, multiplatform service.”
Exactly what the expanded availability, which will begin on a limited basis this summer, will bring BlackBerry in business terms was unclear from the presentation. Mr. Heins said there would be no charge to download either the Apple iOS or Google Android apps.
Charles Golvin, an analyst with Forrester Research who was at the conference, said any financial gain would be indirect. BlackBerry, he said, appears to be hoping that people who find BBM useful on competitors’ phones will then consider changing brands.
The plan also appears intended to expand the audience for a new BlackBerry Messenger feature, BBM Channels, which Mr. Heins compared to Twitter during the company’s announcement.
In his presentation, Mr. Heins cast the feature as one that would be used mainly by corporations and public figures like musicians to create feeds of messages, although individuals would also be able to set up channels. BBM users, in turn, will be able to subscribe to those channels in much the same way they follow people and companies on Twitter.
Again, Mr. Heins offered no information about the potential financial impact of the new service, which became available in a prototype form on Tuesday.
Mr. Golvin said the BBM Channels service combined some features of both Twitter and Facebook, which corporations may find very attractive. The downside, he added, “is that its reach is teeny-tiny compared to Twitter.”
Given that BlackBerry has yet to start selling one of two previously announced phones based on the new BlackBerry 10 operating system in some important markets, including the United States, the lack of major announcements was not a surprise.
Mr. Heins did show off a new handset with a physical keyboard, the Q5, which resembles the Q10 phone that will go on sale in the United States next month. Unlike the Q10, which comes only in black or white, the Q5 will be available in a variety of colors, including pink.
But Mr. Heins said the Q5 was a lower-cost model that would be sold only in developing countries, which have become an increasingly important part of BlackBerry’s business.
The company also announced some additional features that would be available in an upgrade to the BlackBerry 10 operating system as well as in the software that information technology departments use to manage BlackBerrys and, now, iPhones and Android phones.
Over the past year, Mr. Heins has repeatedly said that BlackBerry hopes, with its new operating system, to take over a wide variety of computing tasks, including many now performed by desktops and laptops.
The BlackBerry subsidiary that developed the operating system, QNX Software Systems of Ottawa, has long been a supplier to automakers. So at last year’s conference, Mr. Heins showed off a Porsche convertible fitted with several BlackBerry PlayBook tablets to illustrate his plan.
This year, there was no mention of the PlayBook, which has been notably unsuccessful and sold at heavily discounted prices. But Mr. Heins had a new luxury car to display: a Bentley Continental convertible that was specially equipped with an unusually large touch screen.
The screen displayed a variety of car controls and information from a computer that Mr. Heins said used the BlackBerry 10 operating system.
Its display bore little resemblance to the user interface on BlackBerry 10 phones. But Mr. Heins and a QNX executive used it to make a BBM video call to another BlackBerry executive. Perhaps anticipating obvious concerns, Mr. Heins emphasized that the feature automatically switches to voice-only calling when the Bentley is in motion.

Google Glass Can Now Do More: Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr Apps Released for Glasses

Google might have been mum on its much-buzzed-about glasses on day one of its big Google I/O Developer's Conference, but today the company has announced a series of new Glass-based applications.Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Elle magazine all unveiled new applications for the connected glasses, which overlay digital information in the physical world. The Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr options all allow Glass wearers to share their photos on the respective social networks straight from the glasses.

While the Facebook app is restricted at the moment to just sharing photos taken with the glasses, Twitter allows for that feature and some other notification options. The app will also allow you to see Twitter notifications and respond to messages.

"In addition to sharing photos, you can also keep up with the people you follow on Twitter through notifications — for mentions, DMs and Tweets from users for whom you've turned on notifications. As always, you can reply to, retweet or favorite these Tweets," Twitter engineering manager Shiv Ramamurthi said in a Twitter blog post today.

ABC News tried out the Facebook and Twitter apps and can report that they did work as promised. We snapped a photo on the glasses, tapped it once to share and then we were able to select the social network to share it with. However, installing the sharing-based apps are a bit clunky at the moment. You must install the apps from the Glass app on the phone and then enable sharing in the web-based Glass control panel.

The other new media apps like CNN and Elle are easier to get working. Similar to The New York Times app, both CNN and Elle show snippets of information from the respective publications. For instance, with the Elle app, users will receive text and photo-based updates throughout the day about fashion news.

Google Glass is not yet available for purchase; instead, Google has begun selling an Explorer Edition for $1,500 to early adopters and software developers.
At this week's Google conference the company is holding sessions teaching software makers how to make Glass applications, instructing developers about the software tools and suggesting the apps that aren't too distracting.

Google told ABC News yesterday it plans to bring its new Hangouts appand more social functionality from its Google Plus network to Glass sometime soon. Google Plus is already deeply integrated into Glass -- you can share and see notifications from friends.

How to Hack Google Glass !

Google Glass owners can hack their Glass to run Android apps or even Ubuntu, and two software engineers from Google were willing to show a roomful of developers how. That also means Android developers can start tweaking their apps immediately so that they appear better to Glass users and are optimized for Glass gestures.
In the Google I/O developers session, "Voiding Your Warranty: Hacking Glass," Hyunyoung Song and P.Y. Laligand, two Google software engineers, showed demos and gave instructions for hacking Google Glass to two different levels.
First they showed debug mode, which lets a Google Glass wearer run Android right before their very eye, and connect via Bluetooth to a secondary input source, such as a wireless keyboard, to allow for additional navigation not natively supported by Glass.
The second hack puts Glass into root mode, which voids the warranty, and in the session the engineers showed how doing so can enable Ubuntu on Glass.
The first hacking trick, debug mode, takes little more than downloading the latest Android SDK, making sure you have the right operating system (Android ICS MR1 4.0.4), and executing a few commands. Once it's finished, the Glass wearer sees an Android screen in landscape mode as their Glass view. Developers coding for Android can take that as an opening gambit to start designing app home screens with black backgrounds and white text (which is ideal on Glass for contrast and battery life purposes; 640 by 360, if you're taking notes).
Glass does work as an input method for navigating the app, but with limitations. Swiping backward and forward works for screen scrolling, tapping the side of the device is the same as the enter command, but for a few additional navigation motions, you'll need to connect a secondary input device via Bluetooth. During the demo, Lalingand connected a small, portable keyboard that let him mouse around the screen, which the audience saw via projection.
In debug mode, Glass owners can install APKs, and the Glass device does in deed remain under warranty, with OTA updates still allowed. In other words, the Glass owner is not rooting the devices, so she or he cannot access user data space, delete stock Glass system applications, or replace the operating system.
In the more gutsy mode, root, the Glass warranty is invalid and the Glass owner loses OTA updates, but the capabilities for hacking are much greater. But you could, for example, run Ubuntu as the operating system, which one Glass explorer (early user during the limited trial phase) did. Rooting the device also means you can change system partitions (e.g., /data, /system/apps).
So How Do You Gain Root Access?
In short, there are five commands for gaining root access (but many more notes and details to come from Google soon):
$ adb reboot bootloader
$ fastboot oem unlock
$ fastboot flash boot boot.img
$ fastboot reboot
$ adb root
When you unlock the device, visit developers.google.com/glass/downloads for a playground of Glass stuff.
